Kenneth Davis Supports Local Artists and Wins $1,000
by Kay Hansen
The Pepsi Refresh grant "Support Your Local Artist" (SYLA) will create an art-buying network using smartphones and a dedicated website that will "auction" off the work of new artists.
SYLA won a $25,000 grant from Pepsi in March. Online voters who wrote in to say they voted were eligible for a $1,000 prize.
Kenneth Davis, formerly of Minneapolis, and now living in the Grove City area of Florida, won the drawing and will receive the $1,000 prize money.
"I was shocked," Davis said. "I like to stay in touch with my friends and when I heard about this project I knew I had to vote every day. I'm glad it won."
Davis works for a law firm and plays the piano semi-professionally.
"I'm going to use this money to help make a nice quality CD to sell when I'm performing and pay down my credit card."
SYLA is expected to be up and running by this fall; artists will be able to upload photos or videos of their work and descriptions onto the web/smartphone site. Their work would then be categorized into various categories, such as sculpture, painting, video, for ease of search.
